Letters to the Editor: Dec., 2010/Jan., 2011

To the Editor,

Although I had seen The Vienna Review before it was our recent meeting that made me read it more carefully and study its intention and format. I am impressed both by the selection and treatment of topics and themes and by the way the articles are written. Congratulations!

Some medium paying attention to what is interesting in and about Austria and Central Europe, i.e. in the eyes of a knowledgeable and friendly foreigner, is missing in the German language as well. So far foreign English papers carry articles on Austria only if horrors occur (Fritzl et al) or nostalgia is en vogue (the Kaffeehaus) or strange things happen (Austria as an exotic country). Is The Vienna Review delivered to the States or to Britain?

I would wish that many Austrians would also check news with the help of The Vienna Review.

Raoul Kneucker, Vienna

To the Editor,

I read the article “A Rich Flavour? Meet the makers of Fairtrade Coffee”, by Christian Cummins [Special Report, TVR March 2012] and found it interesting and informative, voicing the troubles of smallholding farmers and giving an idea of the Nicaraguan reality.

Thank you for this very good piece of work!

Mag. Hartwig Kirner, Fairtrade Austria

To the Editor,

Cynthia Peck has outdone her own high standard in her piece on Edith Grossman and her book, Why Translation Matters [TVR February 2012]. With her very individual charm as a writer, Peck conveys the flavour of the book and of Grossman’s work, the art of translation, her own reactions to these – and puts them all in the context of a deeply serious but never solemn world-view. Congratulations to Ms. Peck and to The Vienna Review!

To the Editor,

Thank you so very much for writing the review of Thinking the 20th Century [“Ideas of a Troubled Century”, TVR March 2012, by Justin McCauley].  As you can imagine the work was a very special one for me.

Prof. Timothy Snyder, New Haven, Connecticut

Co-author, with the late Tony Judt
