Letters to the Editor: July/August 2007

To the Editor,

In regard to the controversies about Poland’s role at the EU Summit [Dossier: European Constitution, p.4] some of the problems can be traced back to the Polish media, who often assume the government is wrong, no matter what, and so do not do a good job of informing people. Most support the EU.

The only two newspapers that are critical – Reczpospolita and Dziennik – are called by other journalists “regime newspapers” which is very funny as they existed many years before anyone dreamed that we can have this government in place.

They have been picky on all the governments we have had – they are also critical of this one – and the  journalists of this newspapers have gained many prizes for objectivity in last few years. Now in the eyes (or pens) of others they become regime newspapers because they dare to see anything positive in the Kaczynski duo.

The problem with polish media in my opinion is not lack of information as those two newspapers are widely read (especially the first one).

The source of the problem is that private TV stations are all against this government (with no exception).

And hardly anyone nowadays reads newspapers anymore. We live in a world of pictures and TV is shaping peoples’ opinions, at least in Poland.

It makes me wonder how this government is still scoring 30 % support with all the “media coverage” they get.

To the Editor,

I can’t tell you how many times I have started to send you a note to say how happy we were to come across a copy of The Vienna Review in the Café Landtmann on our recent visit.

We have lived in Vienna for many years, and saw so many English language newspapers come and go, and even of these, none has been as interesting, or tried to do as much as you are aiming for.

So suffice it to say, it was a joy and brings back great memories of Vienna, the people I have known there, and the incredibly different feeling one gets in the city. I do hope it has gotten a wider circulation. It certainly deserves it. And we will watch for when it is available on-line.
