Letters to the Editor: Oct. 2013

To the Editor

I just want to take a minute to congratulate you and your staff for this outstanding publication. As a former magazine editor in my homeland Canada, and a senior communications manager in the United Nations system, I know what it takes. And how rarely anyone bothers to tell you.

Since moving to Vienna two years ago, I have counted on TVR to guide me through this amazing city, the way no tourist brochure or briefing file could ever do – pertinent, and also entertaining – I know I have a better understanding of the complex social, economic and cultural environment. I only wish I could have had an equivalent paper in every great city I have called home.

My only criticism is that you don’t come out more often. Have you considered publishing on a weekly basis?

My thanks to the Vienna Expat Center for bringing us together. And I will continue to tell others!

To the Editor

I want to thank Matthias Wurz for his excellent review of Michael Haas’ new book, Forbidden Music [“Voices in Exile“, The Vienna Review of Books,  TVR Sept. 2013] – a book which seems to be the result of many years, if not decades of research.

We remember Mr. Haas’ work at the Jewish Museum, particularly the fascinating exhibition the Korngold Family, which was the year we moved to Vienna, and Hans Eisler, also very interesting, I think the following year. Among other things, these exceptional musicians remind us of the role of chance, but also that for some people, it is possible to begin again, not just once, but many times.

To the Editor,

We have become big fans of your “5th Column” and loved the little anecdote about Soviet Premier Gorbachev’s quip to Chancellor Vranitzky about Maggie Thatcher [“The 5th Column”, TVR Sept. 2013]. It is easy to imagine that there was no love lost there. But who, pray tell, is Vindobona? We’re dying to know!
