Booming summer tourism

Austria Briefs: Sep. 2012

Austria’s summer tourism is booming this year, according to the data acquired in the first half of the season (May to July) by Statistik Austria. The data suggests a 3.9% increase of overnight stays of guests from abroad to 21.19 million, while the number of domestic figures has dropped slightly by 0.3%. Nevertheless, with a total of 31 million overnight stays, this is the best seasonal result since 1995.

The largest number of foreign guests are traditionally German, and with 11 million (up 2.5%), this group makes up half of the overnight stays. Among the highest increases, however, the statistic shows a record number of Russian tourists (up 18.1%), followed by the Dutch (up 10.9%) and U.S. citizens (up 8.9%).
