The newly opened Skylink Terminal – now called Check-in 3 – at Vienna International Airport is already in desperate need of refurbishment, airport board member Julian Jäger confirmed a few weeks after its opening in June. An estimated €10 million will be invested for improvements in the coming months, to install additional lifts and address the criticism of the lack of barrier-free access to the terminal.
Meanwhile, the government of Lower Austria approved the construction of a third runway, announced on 11 July. A required environmental impact assessment, however, will delay a final decision until early 2014. Construction would begin in 2016, to be completed by 2020. By that time, passenger traffic through the Vienna International Airport is estimated to be 30 million, up by over one-third of the current 22 million.
