Vienna: Green parking fees

Austrian News Briefs

New parking fees introduced in March in Vienna encourage the use of public transport by making short-term parking more costly.

The new fee scheme raises the prices for a 30-minute parking ticket to €1 (from 60 cents), an hour ticket to €2 (from €1.20), and a two hour ticket to €4 (from €2.40), while also upping the fine for illicit parking to €36 (from €21).

Leaving one’s car at home has become cheaper, as residential parking permits (valid in the holder’s home district) now cost €120 per year, compared to €135 previously.

The change came ahead of corresponding reduction in the price of public transport: from 1 May, an annual pass for Vienna’s public network will cost €365, down from €449.
