Talks on Transnistria

Germany, Russia and Moldova discuss the future of a Russian-speaking breakaway region in Moldova.

Representatives from Germany, Russia and Moldova continued talks at a quaint lakeside town in Bavaria to discuss the future of a Russian-speaking breakaway region in Moldova.

The meeting took place from 20 to 22 Jun in Rottach-Egern on the Tegernsee as part of the OSCE’s “5+2 Talks” focusing on the future of Transnistria, a 100km-long strip of land wedged between Ukraine and Moldova. Moldovan Prime Minister Vladimir Filat and Transnistrian leader Yevgeny Shevchuk were also in attendance.

The breakaway province declared its independence in 1990, but has since failed to gain full recognition.

Talks will continue at the next meeting of the representatives hosted by the OSCE in July in Vienna.
