Natascha Kampusch. Josef Fritzl. Austria has certainly acquired an unwelcome reputation when it comes to cellars and imprisonment. But could that same scenario be the basis for a romance? That’s the challenging premise of The Collector, Mark Healey’s stage adaptation of John Fowles’ 1963 novel, which Open House Theatre will be performing in April.

Frederick Clegg (Alan Burgon) is a lonely and obsessive young collector of butterflies. Miranda Grey (Julia C. Thorne) is the beautiful and unapproachable art student who catches his eye. Too shy and socially inept to approach her directly, he instead “collects” her by abducting her and imprisoning her in his cellar.

But will she grow to love him, as he expects? And as time wears on, who ends up wielding power over whom? The relationship between captor and captive is explored in a series of tense, psychologically probing scenes that deal with obsession, narcissism, and desire. Eric Lomas directs. In English.
