SkyEurope Warns of Cancellations

News Brief: Sept. 2009

The problem-ridden budget carrier SkyEurope abruptly filed for bankruptcy Aug. 31, suspending all operations. The Slovak Airline was unable to cover fuel costs, or employee salaries, and all flights from Bratislava were canceled.

The company had previously assured travellers that its existence was not threatened when 30 flights in September were canceled. But when no interim financing was available from creditors, the management consequently was unable to cover costs.

Failure to pay airport fees in June had led the Vienna International Airport to refuse further access to SkyEurope planes, requiring passengers to travel by bus to Bratislava for boarding.

On their homepage, SkyEurope apologized for the inconveniences, and advised passengers to book a return flight at their “own expense.” Holders of SkyEurope tickets paid by credit card are advised to seek refunds from their banks.
