War generals meet in village

In the night of 8 and 9 May, 1945, the American General Stanley E. Reinhart and his Soviet counterpart Dimitri A. Dritschkin met in a private house in the Lower Austrian village of Erlauf to celebrate the victory over Hilter’s army. This historic moment became the starting point for a long and intensive critical engagement with war and history in Erlauf, and is now, for the first time, fully documented and displayed in an exhibition.

The self-proclaimed Friedensgemeinde (peace community) Erlauf, hosts the exhibition “ERINNERUNG.EREIGNIS.KUNST, Geschichte und Gedenkkultur in Erlauf seit 1945” (“Remembrance, Occasion, Art: history and the culture of remembrance in Erauf since 1945”), which gives intensive insight into the connections between contemporary history, commemorative rituals and artistic forms of dealing with the past.
