“Triumphant success of the first musical in Austria” announced a shrewd critic, when Kiss Me, Kate had its Austrian premiere at the Volksoper in 1956.

The musical quickly became the Volksoper’s greatest box-office attraction in the theatre’s 60-odd-year history. Kate went on to become the highest point of composer Cole Porter’s long and varied career, the only one of his musicals to exceed a thousand performances on Broadway, and the only one translated into over a dozen languages.

After a 17-year absence from the Volksoper stage, Kiss Me, Kate is now back. Director Bernd Mottl and conductor John Owen Edwards present a vibrant new imagining of the show, which from 25 Oct. – 22 Dec. will not budge an inch.
