What is RSS?
RSS (Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication) is a family of Web feed formats used to publish regularly updated web content. An RSS document, which is called a "feed," "web feed," or "channel," contains information such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts.
Why use RSS Feeds?
Using RSS makes it easier to keep up to date with your favorite websites by automating the process of manually searching for new content on a particular website, page, topic or section. By using one of the various RSS Readers or News Aggregators you will be notified when new content becomes available. For example, subscribing to the Austria/EU RSS feed of viennareview.net would keep you up to date with new stories in that section alone, filtering out the rest of the website's content. Likewise, if you wanted just the latest news then you would subscribe to the Latest News Feed. You can mix and match, and there is no limit to the amount of feeds you can subscribe to.
What are RSS Readers and News Aggregators?
RSS Readers and News Aggregators are online or offline applications that collect your feeds and group them together in a user-friendly environment. These applications are similar in appearance and function to email clients, such as Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird, Google and Yahoo! Mail. Like most email clients these applications cost nothing. You may well have one already installed. To add feeds to your RSS Reader or Aggregator refer to the manufacturer's website. Here are a few examples:
To access your feeds online:
Google Reader
Bloglines
BlogBridge
To access your feeds offline, from your desktop:
FeedDemon (Windows)
NewzCrawler (Windows)
Shrook (Mac)
NetNewsWire (Mac)
Do I need an RSS Reader or Aggregator to access my feeds?
No. Most browsers like Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari allow you to gather feeds like you would bookmarks. Readers and Aggregators are tools for better managing your feeds; they automate the process of manually checking for new content. However they are not necessary to view RSS feeds. The following sections explain how to subscribe and view your feeds in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari without using a Reader or Aggregator.
Internet Explorer
Click on the RSS icon located in the tool bar, next to the Home icon.
The RSS feed will open in a new page. Click on the subscribe button to add the feed to your favorites
You can access your feeds through the "favourites" pannel in the toolbar.
Firefox
Click on the RSS icon in the right portion of the url address bar, next to the bookmarks star icon.
Select the Live Bookmarks option from the drop down menu at the top of the screen and then click Subscribe Now. You can now determine where you want to keep your feed; the default setting will place the feed link in the Bookmarks Toolbar.
Unlike a normal bookmark in Firefox, an RSS feed located in the "bookmarks toolbar" is indicated by the RSS icon that precedes the name.
Safari
Click on the RSS icon in the right of the url address bar.
In the right menu bar you have a search option, various filters and the ability to adjust the length of each summarized topic. Under the heading "Actions," select "Add Bookmark" to save the feed to your Bookmarks tool bar.
You may now access the feed through your bookmarks.
