Still on His "Never-Ending Tour" a Cultural Revolutionary Comes to Vienna
18/02/2009

He is a legend. A living legend. And at the age of 67, he's still on what fans have long since labeled a 'Never Ending Tour.' On Jun. 10, he arrived in Vienna's Wiener Stadthalle one of two Bob Dylan concerts scheduled this summer in Austria.

Approaching the concert hall it was soon evident that something remarkable was about to happen, a one-of-a- kind experience for the 10,000 devoted fans, young and old.

Security was very strict that night, as bad as the airport, so movement was slow. Guards patted people down -- women as well as men -- and digital cameras were confiscated. It felt invasive and very out of place. No videos, no photographs, no interviews allowed. Dylan policy.

Emigre Scientist and Nobel Laureate Eric Kandel Honored in Vienna in May

As the year 1939 dawned, a young Jewish boy named Eric Kandel was living with his family in a small apartment at Severingasse 8, in Vienna's 9th District. Anti-Semitism was beginning to spread and acts of discrimination were increasing; the 9-year-old and his younger brother were forced to emigrate alone to the United States, with their parents following five months later. But like nearly all Viennese Jews, they left with nothing; the Nazis had already confiscated their possessions. One loss particularly hurt: a shiny, blue toy car powered by a remote control -- a birthday gift from his parents that stayed forever imprinted on his memory.

All of Vienna is currently infected with soccer fever, as the opening of the European Championship is lurking just around the corner. Soccer balls and Austrian flags are everywhere — on subways, cars, or on food packaging, and on billboards all over this city that is the proud co-host of the European Championship 2008.

So it was not surprising that EURO 2008 made it into this year's Wiener Festwochen (Vienna International Festival), which, each year between May and June presents theatre, music and dance productions by famous artists from around the world.

A mere 11,7% of all students enroll in science programs at Austrian universties
03/02/2009

Let's face it: most students despise science. Though unfortunate, in fact, science and technology are among the least favorite fields of study. The latest study reports by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, concluded that a mere 11.7% students enrolled in science programs at Austrian Universities.

This has not escaped the attention of the European Union who met in Lisbon in 2000 and established a set of goals 'to make the EU the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world, focusing on boosting research and development,' with a supporting study to measure the interest in scientific research in all of the EU's 27 member states. Austria, it turns out, is part of the problem and may be impeding the successful achievement of that goal.
