Mayhem and melodrama rule the high seas in Tom Stoppard’s transatlantic comedy of breezy wit and sharp timing
01/12/2011

The name Tom Stoppard usually means philosophical theatre – works like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, The Real Inspector Hound, or Travesties. And perhaps that was what theatre-goers at Vienna’s English Theatre expected when they bought their tickets for Stoppard’s Rough Crossing. But – surprise! – they are met with a delightfully airy musical comedy instead.

Painfully true, Bloodshot‘s humanity and heart give the thriller more of a connection to reality

Against a dismal apartment set with spare furniture, grey walls, a dishevelled clothesline of hanging photographs and a few empty liquor bottles, Bloodshot one-ups the typical thriller in an unexpected way: It also breaks your heart.

A Non-stop Parade of Vibrant Colors and Fanciful Shapes, Beauty one is Never Quite Prepared For

My first Italian adventure to Venice was full of surprises. After a restless sleep, a 1,5-hour pit stop in Salzburg and a lot of entertaining stories, we finally arrived in the 'City of Bridges' - or at least somewhere near it - and stood in a cold rain to catch a bus to the Camping Fusina Tourist Village. The rickety bus ferried us through narrow, winding streets to our campsite at the mouth of the Brenta Canal.

The Austrian Avant Garde Fashion Scene Returns to Simplicity

Bright white lights and sleek fabrics. Bubbly wine and wide-eyed wonder. Smooth silver pins fashioned into the shape of human reproductive organs. All are tied together to weave a common thread: the Austrian underground fashion scene is cutting-edge and definitely thriving.

On the evening of Jun. 4, guests streamed through the tall, heavy doors of the Fine Arts Academy's Semper Depot in Vienna's 6th District for an evening of fashion sponsored by city's Departure program for Creative Industries. Cheerful servers slid by balancing trays of complementary champagne. We discovered we were to go one better: A friend had scored us VIP seating and free drinks for the evening.

Arrests and Jailings of Animal Rights Protestors Draw Outrage From the Left

Arrested for a press release? Animal-loving individuals accused of organized crime? For a group of Austrian activists, these are more than just headlines.

May 21 saw the arrests of 10 animal rights activists throughout Austria on accusations of belonging to a criminal organization and engaging in criminal activity under Section 278a of the criminal code. Since that time, the activists have remained in police custody without being formally charged, while the police continue their investigation.

On the Hoher Markt, an Imperial Procession on

For someone who prides herself on her sense of direction, I get lost in Vienna a lot - about every three days, in fact. Most passersby are able to aid me to some degree. The big problem is my complete inability to speak German. As a Spanish student, I've mystified many (even myself) with my choice to spend the summer in Vienna versus a Spanish-speaking country. Knowing most Austrians understand a little English was a comfort, though, so I wasn't terribly concerned…

Until I arrived here and started getting lost. Often, my garbled pronunciation of a place name becomes insurmountable, and directions can sometimes leave me more confused.

But there's one place all Austrians seem to know and love -- and that I can pronounce: the Anker clock.
