Dear Diary,

Every year, Velden in the South of Austria hosts an event called Fete Blanche where young and old get together and dress in white, drink wine and simply have fun. At this time of the year, the Viennese drive down to enjoy the refreshing water of the Wörthersee and an exciting clubbing experience in white. And so did my friends and I.

The occupation of the Audimax at the University of Vienna is now entering its fifth week at this writing, triggering similar protests at universities across Europe and effectively forcing the Austrian government to act on a range of issues that have increasingly crippled the country’s academic life at all levels.

Dear Diary,

It was one of those Saturday nights. Some friends wanted to come look at my new apartment after a night out, so we left the party early, knowing that my home was always a catastrophe: dirty plates on the table, a conspiracy of cobwebs and dust bunnies, smelly laundry clogging the doorways and clothes drying on the staircase. This had to change, and fast!

For not being entirely sober, we did a pretty good job cleaning up. And in the meantime, our friends were making their way into the elevator, not knowing what was awaiting them. Living on the top floor, taking the stairs was always a challenge, and the only other way to access my apartment was by using the tiny, 1x1 m2 elevator.

Dear Diary,

Weekends are considered by many to be the best days of the week: no work, no school and no worries. With the sun shining into my apartment windows on the last days of summer, my boyfriend and I decided to take a walk through the center of town and to our favorite little Italian restaurant with, in our opinion, the best lasagna.

At Restaurant Sole guests feel they just crossed the border

At the end of a busy city day, I often long for a cozy little place, where I can relax, have a glass of wine and a satisfying meal, detaching myself from the crazy comings and goings on every side. The other day, I found that place, and strange as it sounds, it was a coincidence.

Walking down the Kärtnerstrasse, gloomy and crowded in the rain, the relentless drops were soaking my hair. We (two friends and I) absorbed in trying to avoid the puddles below and dueling umbrellas above, turned onto a side street to get out of the line of fire, hoping to find a quiet place for lunch. What we found was Restaurant Sole, at Annagasse 6-8.

The enduring mystique of fin-de-sciecle Vienna in an exhibition at the Belvedere

Delicate figures of pale women with knee-long waves of silky hair vaguely supported by a large flower, frail hands, large piercing eyes and seducing forms: This is the Mucha woman, an image of romantic perfection and part of the enduring mystique of fin-de-siècle Vienna that is the subject of a major exhibition at the Lower Belvedere through June 1.

Dear Diary,

I love to travel – train, bus, ship or plane, it doesn’t matter, just as long as I get from one destination to another. But with my Russian family, no trip begins or ends ‘normally’…

This time we are off to the U.S. Our luggage packed and waiting at our door, we sat for a moment on the sofa in the hall. Russians do this before leaving, for good luck and well, to simply remember if you forgot anything or not. In my opinion it was unnecessary, and we were already running late…

Dear Diary,

Owning my own car, I rarely use public transportation! So it was at the age of 20 when I took the train for the first time in my life, traveling to Salzburg at 19:00 of a Friday evening.

Now, for all of you experienced travelers, this may seem like a simple undertaking. Not for me! Arriving at the Westbahnhof with plenty of time to spare, I stared up at the signs, looking for the next train that was heading to my destination. There it was, track 9. I held the large heavy glass bowl under my arm, a present I had bought for my mother’s birthday, while people rushed by, their shoulders colliding with mine. I angled sideways, fearing for the bowl, and headed for the track.
