Women’s equality: is the practice catching up with the law?
01/03/2010

I started my day with a cup of coffee and the morning paper, when a quote by Pat Robertson jumped off the page:

“Feminism is a socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.” All that said in support of work segregation and elimination of women from competing for what are thought of as men’s jobs. This might be “old news” for some, but it’s a scandal nonetheless, at least to the eyes of women in Austria.

13 Jacmel, Haiti
More than immediate aid will be needed to alleviate the island’s misery
01/02/2010

When a combination of fireworks and lighting lit up the Haitian sky on New Year’s Eve – shining above the Iron Market, the Statue of the Unknown Slave and the Gingerbread houses – none of the people celebrating would have expected that, only 12 days later, this small republic of nearly nine million inhabitants would suffer the first natural disaster of the new decade, and the biggest since 2004’s Indian Ocean tsunami.

January 2010 not only brings with it a new decade, but also five new countries that will be part of the United Nations Security Council as non-permanent members. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria will start their two-year term as per the decision of the General Assembly on Oct. 15 at the New York headquarters. How to find the perfect partner with a little help from computer science
01/10/2009

From 5 to 122… This is your window of opportunity! Your chance to find the perfect mate! Unless it takes the whole 122… In some cases, people have actually spent a lifetime looking. Many tell happy tales of success, but others… well, when it was their turn, let’s just say fortune was looking in the other direction.

Why start at five? Well, this is the age when children begin to develop social affections, when the identification with the mother is broken and a child can build focused friendships. It is also the time of the first puppy-love... Oh, those simple and exquisite romances of early age!

And why 122? Simply because this is the longest anyone has ever lived. Still, it may not be enough. Fortunately, there is a scientific formula that can ease the way!

“A new beginning.” That is how U.S. President Barack Obama addressed his Muslim and Arab audience, Jun. 4, from the Major Reception Hall at Cairo University, Egypt. 10 Sky Europe
In the red since its founding, SkyEurope’s financial situation deteriorated further from the economic downturn in 2008
01/07/2009

Despite the gloomy economic forecasts and a decision to file for bankruptcy protection, the Slovak budget carrier SkyEurope is committed to surviving the financial crisis.

“This period of re-organization under creditor protection will give the company time to restructure its debt and become attractive for new equity investment,” the company spokesman said in a press release Jun. 22.

“I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read in the train” - Oscar Wilde
01/06/2009

Dear Diary

Yesterday was sunny, outside the walls of my personal dimension and inside as well. As I walked into the university, I was preoccupied with a blend of relief, anxiety and satisfaction from having reached the place in which I would invest my energy for the coming years. Yes, it was warm and sunny outside, and it reflected on the clarity of my plans now.

08 Don Giovanni
Since opening the Staatsoper in 1869, Mozart’s famous seducer has proved irresistible; but the true drama isn’t only on stage
01/06/2009

Expectations were high as I walked into the Staatsoper. This was my first-ever opera on stage – Don Giovanni, the same work performed at the opening of the opera house 140 years before. That should have been drama enough! I had no idea I was about to watch three dramas simultaneously. But the next few hours would take me on a strange and captivating journey...
