Upcoming Literary Events


An outspoken peace activist and supporter of the Palestinian cause, leading Israeli novelist David Grossman will present his work at the Viennese Burgtheater, mid-April. The selected lines will be read in Hebrew, followed by Austrian actress Elisabeth Orth’s German translation. Grossman’s books have been translated into more than 30 languages, covering topics from children’s literature to political activism and poetry.

Sound:Frame is a two-week festival of audio-visual celebration of the arts, taking place at different locations around the town. The 2011 fifth edition portrays the subject of “perFORMance.” Organised in co-operation with the Vienna House of Literature, the event will include works like A Sorrow beyond Dreams and A Life Story by Peter Handke, NO PROBLEM – A Little Trilogy of Death by Elfriede Jelinek and several works by R.M. Rilke, as well as a lyric performance of urban female literature.

Slam MC Diana Köhle invites us to another monthly poetry slam in Vienna’s own Literaturhaus. Instead of classical readings, the event will include the competition for the public’s acclaim. Eligible are all those who apply on location and are willing to read at least 2 original texts before an audience for no longer than 5 minutes. Towards the end of the evening, winners will receive prizes and literary recognition.

The Viennese Chamber Orchestra will be performing a string quartet version of Haydn’s 18th century world famous composition The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross. This much acclaimed piece consists of seven slow sentences attributed to the last moments of Jesus Christ and comes precisely at the opportune time for Easter anticipation. Between the musical parts, artist couple Brigitte Karner and Peter Simonischek will read excerpts from various international literary works on the subject of death and resurrection.
