BLOOMSDAY 2010 IN VIENNA

According to Rolf Schwendter’s publication “Subkulturelles Wien,” the first Austrian Bloom’s Day was celebrated 1966. The initiators were, apart from Schwendter, Marc Adrian; Joe Berger and Gunter Rupp. The Viennese Avantgarde managed to bring a tradition to the capital that had already been deeply manifested in other big cities: the tradition of celebrating the Bloom’s Day on Jun. 16 every year in order to honor James Joyce, author of “Ulysses” whose protagonist travelled through Dublin on Jun. 14 1904. Being celebrated for the fourth time in Vienna, this day is not only a tribute to Joyce but also to the the ability to play with words because apart from love and dreams, only the game and art are terrains of hope in times of failure of conventional politics.
